Martial Arts Background

Kevin began training in martial arts as a child, with his first art being Tae Kwon Do. Due to several moves during childhood, he drifted into other sports as a youth including track and football until college. It was during this time that Kevin had an encounter that he would never forget. While visiting friends during spring break, Kevin and his friends were approached by two men that appeared to be students of the university. However, as the men got near the group a gun was drawn and they were robbed at gunpoint for all of their belongings. Despite quickly contacting the police following the incident, they were told that nothing could be done due to a conflict of jurisdiction.

Remembering the level of frustration and helplessness felt during that incident, a decision was made over the next few days. “I will never allow myself to be put in a situation where I can’t protect myself and others again.” In searching for a discipline that included practical self defense techniques, Kevin discovered American Combat Jujitsu - An art that included aspects of Wing Chun, Judo, Karate, and Small-Circle Jujitsu. Since then, Kevin has gone on to earn rank in Judo, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (Purple belt), Tae Kwon Do (Deputy Black) and 2nd degree black belt in American Combat Jujitsu under Professor Tony Maynard.

After moving to the Raleigh area, Kevin continued to seeking ways to further round out his skillset. After being talked into going to a seminar by a friend, Kevin came in contact with Marcus Davis, a former professional boxer and mixed martial artist who was most known for his time on the Ultimate Fighter Series and in the UFC. After a few conversations, the two hit it off and began to train together with a focus on tactics and strategy.

Incorporating what he learned under the tutelage of Professor Maynard and Marcus, Kevin became world champion in sport jujitsu as a brown belt under the World Council Of JuJitsu Organization in 2017. He was able to follow this up with taking the silver medal at the World Games in 2019.

When not competing, Kevin spends his time training others in boxing, kick-boxing, and holding self defense seminars - He’s previously worked with various companies and organizations in the triangle area, including Title Boxing Club, Black Girls Run, MetLife, and Red Hat.
